Executive Director

Source: Organization of American Historians

Location:

Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana

Description:

The Organization of American Historians (located at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana), the largest professional association devoted to the teaching, research, and presentation of United States history, seeks a new Executive Director. The director oversees the administrative offices of the Organization and will work as an advocate for American history more broadly.

The OAH claims over 7,000 members, a staff of fifteen, and an annual budget of more than two million dollars. The Annual Meeting of the Organization is the largest and most diverse gathering of historians of the United States and the OAH’s Journal of American History is the flagship publication of the discipline. The OAH enjoys an engaged and supportive board, an excellent staff, a balanced budget, and a collegial arrangement with Indiana University, where the offices are based and from which the Executive Director will work.

The new Executive Director will have a PhD in history and significant administrative experience in an academic or non-profit setting. The position will require skills in leading a team, working with elected officers and the board, overseeing finances, integrating new technologies, and collaborating with the Executive Editor of the Journal of American History. The Director will also aid the board in strategic planning, managing the Organization's overall budget, and attracting resources to the Organization as it engages new constituencies in new ways.

In addition to these roles, the Executive Director will also be an active and articulate advocate for American history in all the contexts in which it is practiced. That work will require writing and speaking skills, an understanding of new media, and an ability to represent the OAH before leaders of related organizations, potential funders, public officials, and general audiences. The salary of the Executive Director will be commensurate with experience.

Applicants should send letters of application and a c.v. by October 15, 2019, to http://indiana.peopleadmin.com/postings/7979. The committee will ask finalists for a list of recommendations. The first interviews will be conducted in Chicago, Illinois, December 5, 2019. The position will begin July 1, 2020.
