Dmitry Medvedev is first Kremlin leader in 20 years to visit Chernobyl
Dmitry Medvedev became the first Kremlin leader to visit the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in more than two decades on Tuesday, issuing a call for new tougher global rules on nuclear safety.
In a visit timed to coincide with the twenty fifth anniversary of the world's worst nuclear disaster, Mr Medvedev joined Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine's president, in a series of poignant memorial ceremonies for the dozens of people who died in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.
During what was the first visit by a Kremlin leader since Mikhail Gorbachev went to Chernobyl in 1989, Mr Medvedev said Russia had devised a new set of legally-binding rules to bolster the safety of nuclear power plants around the world.....
